A volcano erupted into a bevy of smoke and ash on Tuesday leading to flight cancellations and a local alert.

The Popocatépetl volcano is about 45 miles from Mexico City. About 25 million people live within a 60 mile radius.

Video taken Tuesday shows clouds of billowing black smoke rising from the mouth of the volcano, which also happened last May.

The airport in Mexico City cancelled about 22 domestic and international flights on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the government has issued a yellow alert as citizens are advised to stay away from the volcano and prepare for a possible evacuation.

The volcano had been dormant for decades before it erupted in 1994.

It’s posed a threat ever since as periodic discharges of ash and smoke interrupt daily life.

In 2019, the volcano erupted 14 times in one night, sending up smoke columns up to 5.6 miles high, Reuters reports.
