Mauricio Pochettino clarifies Chelsea quit threat as pre-season ‚plan‘ outlined | Football | Sport

Pochettino has now suggested that his comments were taken out of context. He has revealed that planning for next season has already begun, with him remaining as manager central to those discussions.

“We are planning. We are working. We cannot take some comment from my side to put in a negative way,” said Pochettino.

“I always try to be positive and try to translate my feelings to you and the people. I never said I wasn’t thinking in the future. We are thinking in the future.

“The plan is there, to start the pre-season, the data and everything. It is not in my hands to be here or to not be here.”

Last week, Pochettino said that it would “not be the end of the world” if he were to leave Chelsea this summer. He said: „If we are happy then it’s perfect, but it’s not only if the owners are happy… because you need to ask us also, because maybe we are not happy and we need to split.

„It would not be the first time a coaching staff decided to not keep going. Tomorrow I could say I am going to leave. It’s two parts if they make a decision and it’s not only if Chelsea are not happy, the owner is not happy, the sporting director is not happy.

„Maybe we are not happy because we arrived here with a job to do, but in the end it’s not what we expect. I am not saying I am not happy. If we split it’s not a problem, it will not be the end of the world.“

Pochettino has likely saved his job by overseeing a drastic upturn in form. With his tactics clicking and a young team finally beginning to gel, Chelsea have won their last three matches and have mounted a late charge to qualify for Europe in the final week of the Premier League season.

The Blues are seventh with two matches remaining, level on 57 points with sixth-placed Newcastle. If Manchester United fail to beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final, the two Europa League spots will go to the teams in fifth and sixth, with seventh claiming a place in next season’s Conference League.
