John Fury apologises after headbutting ‚disrespectful fella‘ | Boxing | Sport

John Fury has issued a public apology for headbutting a member of Oleksandr Usyk’s team, acknowledging that his behavior was unacceptable. In a scene fraught with tension and intensity, the father of boxing’s heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, found himself in a heated scrum between both camps.

The air was thick with the exchange of heated words as Team Fury and Team Usyk members engaged in a verbal battle. The charged-up atmosphere caused John to headbutt a man identified as Usyk’s team member, Stanislav Stepchuk.

The action came after he was in an intense forehead-to-forehead staredown with a separate member of Usyk’s camp. In a moment of heightened emotions and tensions, Fury later apologised and attributed the incident to the heavyweight title showdown in Riyadh.

„Sincere apologies to everybody involved. It’s just the way we are. Emotions and tensions are running high. He was a very disrespectful fella,“ said John. „If you come close in a fighting man’s space, you’re gonna cop for something.

„What matters to me is respect for my son and he wasn’t showing any of it. He mentioned my son and that was it, so he had to have it. It doesn’t bother me [bleeding], it’s what we live for, we’re fighting people. That’s a regular occurrence to me.“

Stepchuk said he didn’t say anything about Fury and only shouted „Usyk, Usyk“ to support his team. He reiterated that he had never touched John and wouldn’t because of their age difference.

„I didn’t touch him. He went crazy,“ said Stepchuk. „Yeah [I wanted to punch him], but because of the age difference it would not be very fair. He should not look for an actual fight because he could have a heart attack and finish in the ambulance.“

The incident comes after John Fury’s series of apologies, including his behavior at a press conference ahead of his son Tommy Fury’s fight with KSI, where he caused chaos by flipping tables and engaging in a brawl. He also punched a glass panel and threw another headbutt during the fight faceoff.

Fury’s apologies are a recurring theme, with several boxing fans saying that repercussions, such as being arrested for assault, could be considered in both instances.

„I just want to make a quick apology for my inappropriate language yesterday,“ he said during the build up to Tommy’s fight with KSI. „It was unacceptable, but emotions got high. It was the fight game; it was pandemonium.

„Let me sincerely apologise for my outburst of language. I wasn’t alone doing it, but I feel it’s appropriate to make that apology to the people who came to the press conference… I’ll try and improve.“

The much-awaited fight between Fury and Usyk for the Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship, a match of monumental significance, is scheduled for May 18. This match will crown the first undisputed heavyweight champion in over two decades, a momentous event in the world of boxing.

Adding to its significance in boxing history, all four major world titles will be at stake for the first time in the four-belt era. Both fighters are entering the ring undefeated. Fury holds the WBC title, while Usyk commands the WBA, WBO, and IBF titles.
