Joe Biden’s unexpected response when Keir Starmer asked if football’s coming home | Football | Sport

Starmer travelled to The White House to meet face-to-face with Biden on Wednesday, and was informed that England had won 2-1 against the Netherlands. Ollie Watkins became the hero after manager Gareth Southgate made a bold call and substituted Harry Kane for the Aston Villa striker, but it proved to be a stroke of genius.

Watkins scored a last-minute winner to book England’s place in Sunday’s final, where they will meet Spain in Berlin. Moments after Watkins had scored a reporter asked Starmer if football was coming home, to which the Prime Minister replied: „It looks like it.“

Biden then gave Starmer a compliment by adding; „It’s because of the Prime Minister.“

It’s been an incredible sporting period for England since Starmer was elected Prime Minister, as Labour secured a landslide victory in the General Election. Days after Starmer moved into No. 10 England beat Switzerland on penalties to set up a semi-final tie against the Netherlands.

The following day Lewis Hamilton secured an emotional win at the British Grand Prix, beating Dutch rival Max Verstappen to the line at Silverstone. Now, England has the chance to win their first-ever European Championship after a devastating loss three years ago.

England took an early lead in the final of Euro 2020, which was delayed to 2021 due to the global pandemic. Luke Shaw had fans believing it was finally coming home after he opened the scoring against Italy at Wembley Stadium inside two minutes.

Leonardo Bonucci equalised after 66 minutes and the game ended up going the distance, although England were on the verge of winning the penalty shootout. Three consecutive misses from Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka sealed England’s fate, as Italy went on to win the tournament.

England now has the chance to redeem themselves, and could make history in Germany. It’s all looking good for England and Starmer, but football results haven’t been as positive for Biden and the United States men’s national team.

The USMNT crashed out of Copa America in the group stages and just as England scored a dramatic winner at Euro 2024, U.S. Soccer made a major announcement. USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter was fired just 13 months after being re-hired by U.S. Soccer, and the hunt is underway for a new coach to lead the team at the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
