Prince Harry previously shared one heartbreaking regret that he holds over the death of his late mother, Princess Diana.
The much-loved late royal died from injuries sustained from a fatal car crash on this day – August 31 – back in 1997. Diana was just 36 at the time of her death.
In 2017, Harry and Prince William both used the HBO documentary, Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, to open up about losing their mother when they were just 15 and 12.
Harry and William revealed that their last conversation with their late mother came in the form of a phone call, with Harry sharing that he regrets how short the call was.
In a heartbreaking revelation, Harry said: „I can’t really, necessarily, remember what I said. But all I do remember is probably, you know, regretting for the rest of my life how short the phone call was. And if I’d known that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother—the things I would have said to her.“
Reflecting on the devastating time that they found about about their mother’s death, William said: „There’s nothing like it in the world. There really isn’t.
„It’s like an earthquake has just run through the house and through your life and everything. Your mind is completely split. And it took me a while for it to actually sink in.“
Also in 2017, during an interview with NewsWeek, Harry shared how difficult he found coping with her death.
Speaking of her funeral, which took place just six days after her death, Harry said: „My mother had just died, and I had to walk a long way behind her coffin, surrounded by thousands of people watching me while millions more did on television. I don’t think any child should be asked to do that, under any circumstances. I don’t think it would happen today.“
Speaking in the HBO documentary, William described his own experience, saying: „The family came together and Harry and I tried to talk as best we could about it. But being so small at that age, it was very difficult to communicate or understand your feelings. It’s…it’s very complicated.“
Harry also discussed the shock at dealing with her death – as well as how she meant so much to people that physically didn’t know her.
The royal said: „It was very, very strange after her death, you know, the sort of outpouring of love and emotion from so many people that had never even met her.
„And I was thinking to myself, how is it that so many people that never even met this woman, my mother, can be crying and showing more emotion than I actually am feeling?“
